Education background:

* IT/Computer science

Level of thesis project: Bachelor thesis.

Number of students in the project: 1 student

Target:
This project is intended to improve linearization in measurement systems.

Background:
Epiroc’s Measurement technique group performs measurements and develops sensors and measurement methods.

One of our customized sensors has a built-in linearization function based on a number of polynomials, which are placed at user defined points during a calibration process. At verification of the calibration the linearization is evaluated. If the errors are considered to be too large, another set of points can be selected and the calibration restarts. This iterative method is not optimal and can be time consuming.

Another sensor reads a repetitive pattern and calculates a position with significantly higher resolution than the pattern. Today, calibration of the linearization is performed in a test setup.

Mission:
Your first mission is to develop an automatic linearization method based on the raw values from a large number of points and the relationship to ground truth. The method shall find the optimal points for the linearization polynomials resulting in a minimized linearization error.

Your second mission is to develop an automatic linearization method for the repetitive pattern that at best can be performed during operation without the need for a separate test setup. This will include error estimation and finding the linearization function that globally minimizes the error in the operating range.
The work includes implementing the methods, evaluate them versus today's performance and report your work (written and oral).

This project will be considered a success when methodologies and tools to perform accurate calibration that reduce the linearization error, give an estimate of the overall error and speed up the calibration process are available.

Implementation is preferably performed in Matlab, but alternatives can be discussed.

Qualification:
We are looking for a Bachelor student with both theoretical and practical skills. The candidate needs knowledge in interpolation and estimation methods, programming, and Matlab.

Education background: Relevant education is, but not limited to, Y, D, M.

Level of thesis project: Master thesis.

Number of students in the project: 1 or 2 students

Target:
This project is intended to develop a data driven model to be used for load monitoring in field.

Background:
The tunnel boring machine, Mobile Miner, is a central and vital part of the mining process where it is used. To ensure that the machine is used according to what it is designed for, monitoring of the loads is valuable. This way feedback of the usage to the operator and prediction of the remaining life can be made. As strain measures are not available in field, a data driven approach is suggested. For another product at Epiroc an in-house method has been developed to do strain predictions based on data from the control system of the machine. We would like to investigate this approach also for the Mobile Miner. What is different in this new application is the classification of usage which is qualitatively different from existing method. Measurement data of loads together with logs from control system will be available from a functional test of the Mobile Miner.

Mission:
Your mission in this project will be to investigate suitable input signals and develop a data driven model for load monitoring based on available data from functional test measurement. Also, where needed, classify the usage in order to monitor the life degradation of structural parts. This project will be considered a success when a set of input signals has been motivated and then used to realize a data driven model for which the expected prediction capability has been explored.

Qualification:
We are looking for 1-2 goal oriented and humble students who are self-starters, put attention to details and with a strong sense of responsibility.

Number of students in the project: 1 student (2 students works as well)

Target:
This project is intended to give Epiroc a tool to use when defining GHG (Green House Gases) footprint from the whole life cycle of production and use of our equipment. From mining, through our manufacturing suppliers, to our manufacturing and assembly, to the use of product and to end of life.

Background:
GHG emissions and especially CO2 emissions is in focus worldwide to ensure compliance to the Paris agreement and also to the UN Sustainability goals. Epiroc wants to contribute in best way and need tools to identify where we emit the most and how much. Also our customer’s requests this information in a higher content.

Mission:
Your mission in this project will be to identify emissions in all steps through a products life cycle. Mainly by using known facts from already done studies around universities and other sources. You also need to identify if we can use simplified calculations or more complicated ones. A tool in Excel or similar software can be used where we easily can input our known values about the machine and get GHG output in a simple form.

The tunnel boring machine, Mobile Miner, is a revolutionary technology to excavate rock underground. This is a technique that enables the excavation process to be safer, to have less emissions and to be automated. Therefore this technology is strategical for Epiroc. The design and structural properties of the machine have influence on load variations while cutting and therefore also the life of the product. To fully understand the load variations due to the design and mechanical properties of the system is important to enable optimization of the design. This way both life and performance of the machine can be maximized.

Mission:
Your mission in this project will be to derive of a mechanical model for a representative Multibody System – judged based on ongoing measurement analysis and FE-analysis. Then by using this model investigate the resulting load variations dependence on structure properties, design and rock properties through simulations. This project will be considered a success when, based on the insight from the analysis, recommendations on how structure properties should be matched with a specific design and application.
