Subject area
The subject area for this position is Biomedicine.

Background
Inflammation constitutes a critical component of many common diseases, such as cancer, mental illness, autoimmune disease, metabolic diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The current position is part of a larger project (X-HiDE – Exploring Inflammation in Health and Disease) aimed at using a systems biology approach to investigate inflammatory mechanisms.

More information can be found at: www.oru.se/X-HiDE

The project will build and investigate mathematical and mechanistic models of inflammatory processes on various scales, based on dynamical data produced from in vitro models and human clinical data. The project is transdisciplinary and includes business partners in the Life Science/Pharmaceutical industry. This project is hosted by the Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Center (iRiSC) at Örebro University, which, together with the Functional Bioinformatics group, will be the main affiliation for the position. Örebro University is one of the most expansive universities in Sweden, and was most recently placed as number 84 when Times Higher Education ranked the young universities in the world, and as number 160 among all universities in the world when looking at the citation rate per se.

Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons, who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree, to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills. The applicant will be responsible for developing and investigating dynamical mathematical models based on experimental data available within X-HiDE relevant for a variety of mechanisms at different scales of inflammation. This involves collaborations with both academic and industrial partners within the X-HiDE project. For instance, the project will involve collaborations with AstraZeneca, to develop models based on their in vitro, microphysiological systems, and translations to human, clinical data. The project will also include collaborations with Wolfram MathCore, where educational material and tools are developed, which use inflammation-related models in education. The applicant will engage in tight discussion for hypothesis development, model specification and adaptation, as well as generation of model predictions in close collaboration with experimentally working biomedical researchers and clinicians.

The primary research area is systems medicine, with emphasis on identification of disease biomarkers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) based on metabolomics and other relevant genetic and clinical data. The position will also support other projects and collaborations in the Systems medicine team, by contributing to mining of multi-modal data and analyses of biological networks in health and disease.

Background
The researcher will contribute to IMI project LITMUS - Liver Investigation: Testing Marker Utility in Steatohepatitis, where molecular diagnostic tools are being developed to diagnose and monitor NAFLD.

The research focus is on applications of multivariate and network/pathway modelling approaches to identify the key pathways and markers associated with progression of NAFLD – based on multiomics data including metabolomics (plasma and human liver biopsies), RNAseq (liver biopsies) and metagenomics (gut microbiota) from multiple human cohort studies. The aim is also to translate the research findings into the diagnostic application. The researcher will also be involved in planning of metabolomics experiments at Örebro University, and contribute to analysis and interpretation of metabolomics and other ‘omics’ and clinical data in Systems Medicine team at Örebro University.

Duties and responsibilities
A researcher shall spend their working hours mainly on research. The appointment may also include teaching, when there is a need within the organisation, to facilitate the researcher to acquire qualifications for a teaching appointment at the University. The share of teaching may not exceed a 20 per cent of a full-time post.

Eligibility
Those qualified for the appointment as a researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree.

Assessment criteria
Documented knowledge and experience in biochemistry, biostatistics and statistical learning, involving analysis of biological high-throughput data is a requirement. Experience with medical applications of metabolomics, modelling of biological networks, and metabolic research in general are merits. The applicant should be an expert in the R statistical language. The successful candidate should be creative, have the ability to both co-operate and independently work with research questions. Proficiency in written and spoken English is a requirement. General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to perform the duties well.

Information
The position as researcher is a [full-time fixed-term position. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Kvalifikationer
